Easton is a lovely New England town with lots of farms, nature trails and great neighbors. It's called the town where "farmers and yuppies co-exist”. "Nirvan" sits in the midst of the a 1700 acre nature preserve. In the 90s, Paul Newman and others banded together to purchase over a 1000 acres (685 in Easton, the rest in Westport and Weston) to add to the existing reserve and save the Trout Brook Valley from development. In the summer, you'll notice that the temperature drops 5-10 degrees as you enter Easton (thanks to all the trees). Nirvan is located down the street from both the Aspetuck reservoir and Nature preserve so you can enjoy hiking trails and fruit (apples and blueberries) picking in the orchards of the preserve. There is a small river beach about 5 mins from the house at Aspectuck Park (across the street from the Bluebird Inn, on Route 58), which also has a children's playground and baseball field. You can access the beaches of Westport in 15 minutes, and the ski slopes of Mt. Southington in an hour. Don’t forget to ring the bell in the attic (above the garage)…just a fun thing the kids like to do each time we are there. However cell reception is patchy in many parts of the Merritt Parkway, so you may want to make a note of the directions before you set out. Outdoor Activities 1. Nature Preserve Norton road ends at the Aspetuck Nature Preserve (less than 5 minutes after you take a right out of the drive way). You can enjoy hikes, trail running and biking. Please refer to the map (in the glass jar in the sunroom) to get there. 2. Kayaking There is a pond on Norton road, on your left as you drive up to the house. You can kayak on this. You can also kayak from a spot on the 136 in Westport. 3. Skiing The ski slopes of Southington are approximately one hour away and easy to get to. 4. Apple & Pumpkin picking Silverman's Farm is well known for pumpkins and apples. They also have a petting zoo, hayrides and a store. 5. Beaches There is a small river beach about 5 mins from the house at Aspectuck Park (across the street from the Bluebird Inn, on Route 58), which also has a children's playground and baseball field. The beaches of Westport and Fairfiled are (about 15-20 mins) are equidistant from Nirvan. We usually go to the Sherwood island beach, and go later in the evening when the crowds are smaller. 6. There are a number of things nearby (within 15-20 minutes) - all of which our family has enjoyed. There is the adventure center in Bridgeport with ziplining, and also the Beardsley zoo in Bridgeport. The Westport playhouse has some nice shows, and the Childrens museum in Norwalk is very good. The Norwalk seaport and aquarium is excellent. If you venture further afield (about 30 mins away), New Haven is nearby with Yale university, the Peabody museum, and a whole host of other museums and shows. Shopping and Groceries 1. Tea and sugar are in the canisters on the counter (only the tea is in the correctly named container!). Coffee and creamer etc. are in the cabinets above. We have a stovetop Italian-style coffee maker. The toaster is in the corner cabinet near the cooktop. These cabinets have been labeled. 2. The town of Westport and Fairfield are the nearest shopping locations (approximately equi-distant). You can go on the 58 (Blackrock turnpike) to shopping in Fairfield (Trader Joe, Shoprite, CVS, Old Navy, Starbucks, Wine Store, etc.) You can go on 136 to shopping in Westport (Trader Joe, etc.) Sport Hill farms in Easton also has good organic vegetables. Restaurants 1. The Bluebird Inn on route 58, is a short walk or drive from Nirvan. It's a great, historic brunch place - that looks pretty much as it did when it started. (Parts of the movie Revolutionary Road were shot here). We like to go there on Sat mornings. 2. There are a whole bunch of great places to eat in Fairfield and Westport. Yelp! 3. We love the food at Barcelona. It's located in the Hi-Ho motel in Fairfield and has great food. It's always packed. We go often to Lilac House (Asian /Japanese / Chinese) Mumbai Times (Indian) and Sakura (Japanese) in Westport. TV, Wii, Board games and indoor activities 1. There are some board games in the playroom closet and also in the library. 2. There is a wii in the library. Accessories and games are on the shelves in the library. 3. There is a telescope in the sunroom, along with a starchart. 4. The bird feeder outside the sunroom attracts lots of cardinals, blue jays and a host of other birds. The bird guide is on the table in the sunroom. 5. There is a pool table (ping pong set also) and other games in the basement. Outdoor games 1. Soccer goals and a ball are in the garage, along with a basketball 2. Badminton racquets, net and shuttles are also in the garage 3. There are a couple of other outdoor games – horse shoes and croquet – also in the sunroom. Housekeeping 1. There are 4 King size beds in the four large bedrooms, and one twin in the small upstairs bedroom. There are fresh linens on all the beds. 2. There's also a double pull out couch in the 4th bedroom extension and a double pullout in the living room (near the fireplace). 3. Bed linens are in the closet at the top of the stairs (next to upstairs bathroom). There are some comforters and blankets there as well. There is a twin and Queen air mattress stored in the linen closet. Towels and extra toilet paper are in the closet in the master bathroom. Extra sheets for the king beds are in the bench in the master bedroom. 4. The Carerra and Calcatta marble counter tops in the kitchen and bathrooms are susceptible to staining. Please be careful with cosmetics, wine, lime juice, tea, pasta sauce etc. Especially wine and lime juice. If something spills, PLEASE clean it immediately to prevent damage. 5. Dish detergent and some cleaning supplies are under the kitchen sink. Laundry detergent and other supplies are in the closet next to the garage. 6. There is extra toilet paper in all the bathroom cabinets. Extra kitchen towels are in the pantry (off the kitchen, first door on the way to the laundry room). 7. The hand-vac is located across the pantry and the floor vacuum is in the landing to the basement (the door is in the foyer, under the stairs). 8. You can rinse recyclables and put them in the blue recycling bin (opposite the pantry, or in the big green recycling container outside the garage). 9. Please do not use soap / bubbles if you run the Jacuzzi in the master bath. You can use soap / bubble bath only if you use it as a regular soaking tub. 10. We have a septic, so please don’t put food waste down the kitchen sink. Thermostat The touchpad thermostat in the master bedroom controls the temperature for the entire house. The sheets and duvet covers are also professionally pressed at high heat, and each bed will be prepared and ready for your arrival. Note that we use TWO layers of pillow protectors, in addition to the pillow cases for your added protection and cleanliness. We can also provide an additional cleaning service DURING your stay, if you'd like (the additional cleaning fee will be $175), just let me know and I would be happy to make that arrangement. The dishes/glassware/silverware will be washed at a high temperature in a 3 hour dishwasher cycle. The refrigerator will also be cleaned and disinfected.
